Portal 9 marked the launch of its third issue with an evening of readings and a film screening at Dawawine: Espace des arts de la scène, du son, et de l'image in Beirut, Lebanon, on Saturday, February 8, 2014. Dozens attended the event, which began with an introduction to the issue, readings by novelist Hassan Daoud from Naqqil Fouadaka and by translator Lina Mounzer from As She Once Was, her translation of the latter's novel, both commissioned by and published in Portal 9. Alongside the novella and its English translation, “Fiction” includes short stories by two Russian authors, Arslan Khasavov and Irina Bogatyreva, inviting readers to consider new avenues of cultural exchange between Arab and Russian literatures. Likewise, the launch event concluded with a screening of the documentary Palms by Artour Arkassian, a film which is part of the winter 2014 cinema series at Dawawine.
