The Red Dot Award: Communication Design 2013 winner’s exhibition “Design on Stage” at the Umspannwerk Alexanderplatz
The Solidere Multidisciplinary Design Department received one of the most acclaimed international design awards, the Red Dot Best of the Best Communication Design 2013, for exceptional creative achievements in the field of communication design for the Annual Report 2011: City in Scenes, City in Portraits. Team members received the award at a ceremony that was held at the Konzerthaus in Berlin on October 18, 2013.

Will the city outlive the forest?

Portal 9, a new Arabic-English journal of stories and critical writing about the city, seeks proposals for its spring 2014 issue, “Forest.”

As logging, ranching, and farming raze forested land across the earth, new practices in forestry, from sewage afforestation in Egypt to the privatization of “services” provided by healthy rainforests in Sumatra, continue to emerge, reconfiguring the dynamic between city and forest.

Structured around the theme “Where Are We Now?,” the Marrakech Biennale 2014 is said to “focus on the geographical connections that underlie the immediate temporality,” examining the intersection of two aspects, “urgency” and “geography.” This review takes a look back at the 4th edition of the Biennale in 2012 to consider how it has previously considered, or failed to account for, its own geographical context.

On Sunday 18 May, 2013, Portal 9 hosted an open studio in its offices at Nejmeh Square in Downtown Beirut, offering an in-depth preview of the second issue, “The Square.” Drawing a diverse crowd of artists, students, writers, academics, architects, urban planners, and designers, visual material displayed across the office spaces inspired a lively discussion about the new issue.
